1) союз (+ личные формы глагола; в разн. знач.) that (+ should + inf; + subjunctive I уст., амер.); (при обозначении цели) (so) that (+ may + inf); in order that (+ may + inf; ср. ниже)

необходи́мо, что́бы у них э́то бы́ло — it is necessary that they should have it; they must have it

невозмо́жно, что́бы он сказа́л э́то — it is impossible that he should have said that; he could not possibly have said that

они́ предложи́ли, что́бы он прочёл письмо́ — they suggested that he should read [that he read] the letter

он говори́л гро́мко, что́бы все они́ слы́шали его́ слова́ — he spoke loud (so) that all of them might hear his words

он хоте́л [сказа́л (им), приказа́л (им), попроси́л (их)], что́бы они́ сде́лали э́то — he wanted [told, ordered, asked] them to do it

что́бы ... не — that ... not (+ should + inf)

что́бы он не забы́л — that he may not forget; lest he should forget

на том [о том и т.п.], что́бы — = чтобы

он наста́ивает на том, что́бы они́ бы́ли приглашены́ — he insists that they should be invited; he insists on their being invited

так, что́бы — so that (+ may + inf)

для того́, что́бы — in order that (+ may + inf)

2) как частица (+ инф.) in order (+ to inf) или не переводится; (so) that (+ may + inf - с повторением подлежащего главного предложения); in order that (+ may + inf - с таким же повторением; ср. выше)

он встал в шесть (часо́в), что́бы быть там во́время — he got up at six (o'clock) (in order) to be [(so) that he might be; in order that he might be] there in time

что́бы не — (in order) not (+ to inf); (so) that ... not (+ may + inf; ср. выше); in order that ... not (+ may + inf; ср. выше); lest (+ should + inf; ср. выше)

он встал в шесть, что́бы не опозда́ть — he got up at six (in order) not to be late; he got up at six lest he should be late

на том [о том и т.п.] что́бы — on [of, etc] (+ ger)

он наста́ивает на том, что́бы (им) пойти́ туда́ — he insists on (their) going there

без того́, что́бы не — without (+ ger)

он не мо́жет написа́ть ни стро́чки без того́, что́бы не сде́лать оши́бки — he can't write a line without making a mistake
